Christmas in Auckland Franklin Road

For over 30 years, Franklin Road in Ponsonby, Auckland, has transformed into a dazzling spectacle of Christmas lights, becoming a beloved tradition for locals and visitors alike. What began in 1993 with a single family’s festive display has grown into a community-wide effort, with residents adorning their homes with elaborate light arrangements, inflatable characters, and festive decorations. The street typically comes alive in early December, drawing crowds of people who stroll along, admiring the creativity and festive spirit on display.

The history of Franklin Road’s Christmas lights is rooted in community spirit and a desire to spread holiday cheer. The tradition started with just a few neighbors joining in, and it gradually grew over the years as more residents embraced the festive spirit. The lights have become a symbol of Auckland’s Christmas celebrations, attracting thousands of visitors each year and creating a magical atmosphere for families and friends to enjoy.

In recent years, the Franklin Road Christmas lights have faced some challenges, including concerns about crowd management, traffic congestion, and the impact on residents. The Ponsonby Business Association has stepped in to help manage the event, providing security and support to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. While the lights may have started a little later in some recent years and run for a slightly shorter period, the tradition continues to be a highlight of Auckland’s Christmas calendar, showcasing the community’s dedication to spreading festive joy.
